Quinn Mitchell of QEM Estates during his NO.925 Freedom Files interview

Freedom Files: Quinn Mitchell Left a Steady Paycheck to Open His Own Brokerage

Quinn Mitchell did not walk out of a job one afternoon and start a company the next morning. He spent years working for other people first, including several years inside real estate itself, before he opened anything with his own name on it. That happened in June.

Mitchell is the latest guest on Freedom Files, our ongoing series with people building a life on their own terms. He runs a commercial real estate brokerage selling net lease properties nationwide, working out of Fort Myers, Florida. He grew up in Connecticut and moved south in 2022.

"You just have to go all in, but actually have a plan."

The Path Was Not a Straight Line

Before any of this, Mitchell played college basketball. After that he worked a run of ordinary jobs: a restaurant, customer service at a sporting goods retailer, Amazon, and then a management role at Hertz. None of it was a career plan. It was work.

What changed things was a mentor he had known since college, someone already in real estate who kept telling him to get licensed. Mitchell got his real estate license in the summer of 2020. His mentor then offered him what he would have earned at Hertz for the year, and he went to work for him full time.

Working For Someone Else, Even in Real Estate

This is the part of the story that usually gets skipped. Getting into the industry he wanted did not make him independent. As he put it, he was still working for somebody.

He stayed in that arrangement for years, learning the business on someone else's payroll. He is direct about why that mattered. Some people, he says, have to be okay with not being able to jump straight in on their own, and have to be willing to learn it properly first.

Opening QEM Estates

The company is only a few months old. Mitchell describes the difference plainly: it is a different level of freedom, and there is a lot more pressure on yourself.

Asked what he has learned since opening, he put his faith first, then relationships. In his field it is normal to close a deal with someone and never speak to them again. That is not how he works. His clients turn into friends, and he says the relationship piece is the reason the job is not far harder than it already is. Getting a client to trust you, he points out, is a different thing entirely from managing a transaction. He also credits asking for help when he did not know what to do.

The Hurdle Is Fear, Not Ability

We asked what he would say to someone thinking about going out on their own who has not crossed the line yet. His answer was about fear, not skill.

A job comes with health benefits and a dozen other things you stop noticing until you consider leaving them. The fear, he says, is that you start and it does not work. His view is that you have to be okay with falling flat on your face. Someone once told him they would rather bet on themselves than bet on somebody else, and that reframing stuck.

He is equally clear that betting on yourself is not the same as jumping blind. He did not leave without money set aside to carry him through a bad stretch. Have the plan and the backup, then go all in.

Discipline Outlasts Motivation

Mitchell has never worked from an office. That sounds like the goal until you have it, and then the day is entirely yours to structure: when you train, when you make calls, when you answer email.

He is honest that some mornings, running his own company, he wakes up with no motivation at all. What carries him through is a specific picture of where he wants to be in three to five years. Motivation is strongest at the beginning and then moves up and down. Discipline is what keeps you on the straight and narrow.

What a Freedom Lifestyle Looks Like to Him

We ask every guest the same question. For Mitchell, a freedom lifestyle means not having to answer to anyone, being able to take care of the people he loves, and getting to do what he actually wants to do. In practice that is fishing, some travel, and time with family.

He measures it against what he used to give up. Coming in on holidays. Not being able to leave when he wanted. Not being able to go fishing, or to church, when he chose to. Being able to look in the mirror and answer to nobody is, in his words, a great feeling. He is also quick to add that it comes with a lot more responsibility.

He turns thirty this year and does not have a family yet. He talks about getting his affairs in order now so that when that time comes, nothing has to be scrambled together.
