Van Gogh Life Apparel: Default Roads Optional
The Van Gogh Life collection is for everyone who chose the road that didn't have a guarantee. The artist who kept making things when nobody was buying. The traveler who left the address for the route. The person who picked the harder, more honest path. Made to order, designed for years of wear, and built around a thesis that's actually visible in the work.
The Painter Who Lived His Own Way
Vincent van Gogh sold one painting in his lifetime. He produced more than 2,100 works in just over a decade, including some of the most recognized images in Western art, and was supported financially by his brother Theo for almost his entire career. He chose the road without the guarantee. He kept making things when nobody was buying.
The Starry Night was painted in June 1889 from the window of his room at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, where he had voluntarily admitted himself a month earlier. He painted it during the day, from memory, after observing the sky at night. He called it a failure. It now hangs in MoMA and is one of the most reproduced paintings in the world.
Project 925: Arts Edition
10% of every Van Gogh Life purchase funds Project 925: Arts Edition. Each month, 100% of those funds go to a single Connecticut arts nonprofit, small enough that the impact of every dollar is felt locally and the donation isn't diluted across a dozen unrelated causes.
We're a small independent brand. We're not pretending we've been donating for years, we're getting started, and we want to do this in public. The first beneficiary will be announced within 30 days of our first sales month. We post the receipt, name the org, and link back to their work, every month.
Common Questions About the Van Gogh Life Collection and Project 925
What is the Van Gogh Life collection inspired by?
Vincent van Gogh's life. Not the romanticized version, the actual one: he sold one painting before he died, was supported financially by his brother Theo for nearly his entire career, voluntarily admitted himself to an asylum in Saint-Rémy, and made some of the most recognized art in the Western world from rooms above small shops. He chose the road without the guarantee. The collection is for people who recognize that frame.
What does Project 925: Arts Edition fund?
10% of every Van Gogh Life purchase funds Project 925: Arts Edition, which donates monthly to a single Connecticut arts nonprofit. We rotate the recipient every month, post the receipt, name the org, and link back to their work. Our criteria: Connecticut-based, direct arts programming (classes, residencies, education, working artist support), small enough that a focused monthly donation moves the needle.
Has Project 925: Arts Edition donated to anyone yet?
Not yet. We're a small independent brand and we're getting started. The first beneficiary will be announced within 30 days of our first sales month, with the donation receipt posted publicly. We're not pretending to have a track record, we're building one in public, with the receipts to prove it. Subscribe to be notified when each month's recipient is announced.
Why Connecticut arts nonprofits specifically?
No 925 is based in Connecticut. We donate to Connecticut and regional nonprofits because small dollars matter more in small organizations than they do in large national charities. A focused $200 monthly donation to a Title I art classroom or a working-artist housing program moves something real. The same amount donated to a major endowment vanishes into administrative overhead.
Are these tees made to order?
Yes. Every Van Gogh Life piece is manufactured after you purchase it. Nothing is produced speculatively. Nothing sits on a warehouse shelf. The result is minimal inventory waste and supply that exactly matches actual demand. That's the sustainability claim, and it's verifiable on every order.
What is The Starry Night and why is it on the back of the tee?
The Starry Night is van Gogh's most famous painting, completed in June 1889 at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. He painted it during the day, from memory, of the view from his east-facing window. The cypress tree, the eleven stars, the swirling sky, an invented village. He called it a failure. It now hangs in MoMA. We put a desert version of it on the back of the tee because the spirit of that painting — the willingness to keep making things when the world isn't ready — is the same spirit that runs through No 925.
What does "Default Roads Optional" mean?
It's the tagline that runs through the No 925 brand. Default roads are the paths you didn't choose, the ones you inherited, the ones that look like the only option until you actually look at them. They're optional. The Van Gogh Life collection is for people who've already figured that out, or are starting to.
How does shipping work?
Shipping options and any free shipping thresholds are shown at checkout based on your order total and location. Because every piece is made to order, allow 5-10 business days for production before shipping. We'll email you tracking when the order ships.
Can I buy the same piece in different colors?
Color options are listed on each product page. The Van Gogh Life tees launch in heather/ash because that color works as a primed canvas under the painterly print, similar to the texture of an actual van Gogh canvas. Additional colorways may be added based on launch demand.
What is No 925 and what's the brand thesis?
No 925 is an independent apparel brand for people who don't fit the 9 to 5 default. The brand thesis: the conventional path isn't the only path, and the people who chose otherwise deserve clothing that reflects that. Made to order, sustainable, with 10% of every order funding Project 925, our monthly rotating donation to vetted local and regional nonprofits.
