Hoodie Sizing Guide for Men: How to Pick the Right Size

Hoodie sizing is harder than tee sizing because the fit varies so much by intended cut. An oversized small fits like a regular medium. A relaxed large can fit like a slim XL. Below: the sizing system that works regardless of brand.

The 3 measurements that matter

1. Chest width (the most important)

Measure the widest part of your chest, just under the armpits. The hoodie's chest measurement (laid flat, doubled) should match for slim fit, exceed by 1-2" for relaxed, exceed by 3-5" for oversized.

2. Body length

From the high point of the shoulder down to where you want the hem. For most men: mid-hip to upper-thigh.

3. Sleeve length

From the shoulder seam to the cuff. Should end at the wrist bone for slim, slightly past for relaxed, fully covering the hand for oversized.

The rule for sizing each fit

Fit Sizing rule If between sizes
Slim True to size Size down for snug, up for room
Regular True to size Size up for slight room
Relaxed True to size Size up if you prefer roomier
Oversized True to size (already big) Stay TTS — sizing up makes it baggy

The common mistake: sizing up to "make a hoodie oversized"

If a hoodie is cut as relaxed and you size up, you don't get an oversized hoodie. You get a baggy relaxed hoodie. The shoulder seam falls below your shoulder. The body length is too long. The drape is wrong.

True oversized hoodies are cut as oversized from the start.

Sizing up doesn't make a hoodie oversized. It makes a relaxed hoodie too big.

How to read a brand's sizing chart

  • Chest (pit-to-pit, laid flat): Doubles to give you the chest circumference.
  • Body length: Top-of-shoulder to hem.
  • Sleeve length: Shoulder seam to cuff.

If the chart shows a chest of 24" pit-to-pit (= 48" circumference) and your chest measures 42", that's about 3" of room — fits as relaxed. For slim, you'd want a chest of 22". For oversized, you'd want 26".

Brand-by-brand variability

Brands vary by 1-2" within the same labeled size. A medium at one brand might equal a small at another. Always reference the specific brand's chart.

How No 925 hoodies fit

  • Oversized graphic hoodies (10oz heavyweight): True oversized cut. Buy your usual size.
  • Lightweight hoodies (8.5oz): Regular fit, true to size.
  • All-over-print recycled hoodies: Relaxed fit. Size up if you prefer roomier drape.

The fit test

  1. Put the hoodie on.
  2. Check the shoulder seam: at or just past the bone (slim/regular), 1-2" below for relaxed, 3-4" below for oversized.
  3. Check the chest drape: should drape (not cling).
  4. Check the body length: mid-hip (regular) to upper-thigh (oversized).
  5. Check the sleeve length: wrist bone (regular) to past knuckles (oversized).

If 4 of 5 are right, the size is right.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what size hoodie to buy?

Reference the specific brand's size chart on the product page. Compare the chest pit-to-pit measurement (laid flat, doubled = full circumference) to your chest. Match for slim, +1-2" for relaxed, +3-5" for oversized.

Should I size up in a hoodie?

Only if you want extra room within the same fit category. Sizing up a relaxed hoodie makes it baggy, not oversized — those are cut differently from the start.

How should an oversized hoodie fit?

Dropped shoulders 3-4" past your shoulder bone, drape at the chest, hem at mid-hip to upper-thigh, sleeves at or past the knuckles.

How should a slim hoodie fit?

Shoulder seam meets the bone, chest drapes (not clings), hem at the high hip, sleeves at the wrist bone.

What's the difference between regular and relaxed hoodie fit?

Regular sits true to size with a slight drape. Relaxed has 1-2" more room throughout, slightly dropped shoulders, longer hem.

How do hoodies typically run in size?

Brand-dependent. Premium brands tend to run true to size or slightly oversized in their oversized line. Streetwear brands often run intentionally oversized. Always reference the specific brand's chart.

If I'm between sizes, should I size up or down?

Slim or regular: size down for snug, size up for room. Relaxed: size up for roomier. Oversized: stay true to size — sizing up makes them baggy.
