The 5-step routine
1. Turn the tee inside out before washing
This is the single most important step. The friction in the wash drum is what cracks prints. Inside out, the print rubs against the smooth interior of the tee instead of the rough outsides of other clothes.
2. Wash in cold water
Hot water relaxes screen-print ink and softens the bond between ink and fabric. Over time, hot washing dulls colors and accelerates cracking. Cold water (below 80°F / 27°C) preserves ink integrity and saves energy. Modern detergents work fine at cold.
3. Use a gentle cycle
Standard cycles use aggressive agitation. Gentle (or "delicates") uses lower agitation and shorter run time. The print endures less mechanical stress.
4. Skip the bleach and avoid harsh detergents
Chlorine bleach destroys cotton fibers and fades print colors permanently. Harsh detergents (especially powdered ones with optical brighteners) erode the ink-to-fabric bond. Use a mild liquid detergent or one labeled for delicates or graphic apparel.
5. Air dry, or low-heat tumble dry
The dryer is the second most damaging thing for a graphic tee. High heat shrinks the cotton (which cracks the print as it pulls) and the constant tumbling abrades the ink. Air dry on a hanger when possible. If you must use the dryer, low heat for 20 minutes max, then hang to finish drying.
